Don’t Just Look Away

It is lunchtime in downtown Seattle. As thousands of workers spill onto the sidewalks, 240 homeless children already are there. Their somber faces mirror the messages that are scribbled on the ripped pieces of cardboard each holds up for passersby to read: “We had to leave because my daddy hit my mommy,” “I need a place to live,” and others.

While they sure look like real children, in reality these children are life-size cardboard cutouts that look real enough to make hundreds of onlookers stop for closer inspection.

It’s all part of one Alliance for Children and Families member’s campaign to make sure the community no longer can “just look away” from the homelessness problem in King County, Wash. It’s a goal Wellspring Family Services, Seattle, is determined to accomplish, even if it means turning to nontraditional means of marketing. Continue reading.
